Radiation therapy fights cancer but can leave painful burns on the skin. Many of my clients tell me how these burns make simple movements hurt, turning everyday tasks into challenges. This struggle isn’t often discussed, but there are ways to ease the discomfort.

What are radiation burns?

Radiation burns happen because the powerful rays used to kill cancer cells also harm nearby healthy skin cells. This can lead to redness, itching, peeling, and sometimes open sores. Symptoms vary; some people get mild redness like a sunburn, while others face blistering or cracked skin. These issues might start during treatment or appear weeks later.

What causes radiation burns?

Understanding what’s happening to your skin is important. The radiation damages both cancerous and healthy cells, and your skin can’t repair itself quickly enough, so damage accumulates. Factors like the strength of the radiation, the tumor’s location, and individual skin sensitivity affect how severe the burns are.

I’ve worked with many clients to help manage these skin problems. We’ve found practical ways to soothe the pain and promote healing.

Treatment options for radiation burns

Here’s what I typically recommend my clients do after they check with their medical team:

  1. Consulting your medical team about creams or ointments is important. Some of my clients have found relief using prescribed steroid creams to reduce inflammation. Medications like silver sulfadiazine may also help prevent infections. Always discuss any treatments with your oncologist or radiologist to ensure they won’t interfere with your therapy.

  2. Over-the-counter options can offer additional comfort. Gentle moisturizers and pure aloe vera gel have been beneficial for many. It’s best to avoid products with alcohol or fragrances, as they can irritate sensitive skin. Before trying new remedies, check with your doctor to make sure they’re appropriate for your situation.

How to manage radiation burns

Here’s my advice to managing radiation burns:

  1. Keeping the skin clean and moisturized is key. Using gentle, fragrance-free soaps and lukewarm water helps prevent further irritation. It’s better to pat the skin dry gently instead of rubbing it. Applying creams or ointments recommended by doctors can aid healing.

  2. Wearing loose, soft clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton reduces friction on sensitive skin. Avoiding tight clothes and rough materials can make a big difference in comfort.

  3. Protecting the skin from the sun and extreme temperatures helps prevent additional damage. When going outside, cover the treated area with clothing.

  4. Eating a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals supports the body’s healing process. Drinking plenty of water keeps the skin hydrated and aids regeneration.

Emotional coping strategies for radiation burns

Managing stress is important too. Stress can make physical symptoms worse. Finding ways to relax, like walking in nature (with clothing over the area), meditation, breathing exercises, or hobbies you enjoy, can help ease both mind and body.

If you are supporting a loved one going through cancer treatment you can make a big difference to them. Be there for them and what they need, listen without judgment, and help with practical tasks like running errands or cooking meals, and you can greatly alleviate their stress. You might feel powerless at times, but trust me your empathy and patience have a profound impact.
